This course is industry-oriented where basic knowledge is developed to produce highly practical, outcome oriented graduates ready for industry. The structure of the course may allow the final semester to be spent undertaking a plant based project. Employment prospects within the minerals industry are high, with many students finding employment prior to completing their degree. These opportunities enhance their skills and knowledge and significantly increase both their personal network and employment opportunities. Graduates, metallurgists typically seek a place on which they become plant or project metallurgists. The increasingly global extent of the minerals industry greatly enhances prospects for working overseas during their career. In addition to working on mine sites there are opportunities with engineering design companies, consultancies, equipment and chemical suppliers, investment banks, stockbrokers, public service and in research and development laboratories.

Students must have completion of Australian Year 12, or overseas equivalent, including two final year mathematics units. Overall band score of 6.0, with no individual sub-score less than 5.5 and least 18 years of age.
