This course incorporates the study of the cultures, institutions, social behaviors, economies and systems of meaning of all human societies. Anthropology and Sociology includes the topics of religions, politics, kinship, gender, education, health, migration, landscapes and the media. As a student they will investigate various cultural theories and a range of studies on behaviors and beliefs that are used to explore the great diversity of past and present human societies. The study of Anthropology and Sociology will help to understand their place in the world, making these units particularly popular at first-year level, and providing useful skills for living and working in a changing, multicultural society. Anthropology and Sociology are both studied under the Anthropology major, which is the only discipline that offers a way of understanding the whole context of human experiences. The fascinating study of the nature of humanity itself along with the complexities of human social relationships is found within the major of Anthropology and Sociology. It provides training and skills that can be applied to academic, corporate, non-profit or government careers. A major in Anthropology and Sociology lays the foundation for further study at honors and postgraduate level to explore a broad range of topics nationally and internationally. Students may also consider other postgraduate options including degrees leading to a range of professional qualifications.

Students must have completed Western Australian Universities Preparatory Program (WAUPP) with a score of 63, International Baccalaureate with a score of 29, French Baccalaureate with a score of 12, UWA Foundation Program (UWAFP) with a score of 66, GCE or Cambridge Advanced-level Examinations with a score of 8. To be eligible for admission to a program at UWA, they must demonstrate satisfactory performance in a UWA-approved test of English. This is the case even if English is their first language. They must also have WA Certificate of Education in English, Literature or English as an additional language/dialect with scaled mark of 50 or above, in stage 2 or stage 3. TEE English/English Literature with scaled mark of 50 or above English as a Second Language with final mark of 66.60 or above (in 2007). There are different English language requirement for various states.
