This course is designed to provide a general grasp of world archaeological studies with particular emphasis on Australia. The expertise includes Indigenous, historical and maritime archaeology, unraveling the full breadth of Australia's rich Indigenous and colonial history. Archaeology is of crucial significance for the understanding of Australia's past as the only discipline able to study the nearly 60,000 years of human settlement on this continent. The analytical and practical elements of the discipline are taught within laboratory and fieldwork units which are held annually for two or three weeks. These are in combination with specialist units on rock art, Indigenous archaeology, historical archaeology, European prehistory, the origins of humans, and archaeological heritage. UWA is the only university in Western Australia where they can study archaeology. With an active focus on research and strong industry links, it is home to Eureka Archaeological Research and Consulting which provides archaeological services across Western Australia. Archaeologists are in great demand by government departments, industry and other organizations to advise them about archaeological heritage matters. Students can pursue further studies at honors level as well as other postgraduate studies.

Students must have completed Western Australian Universities Preparatory Program (WAUPP) with a score of 63, International Baccalaureate with a score of 29, French Baccalaureate with a score of 12, UWA Foundation Program (UWAFP) with a score of 66, GCE or Cambridge Advanced-level Examinations with a score of 8. To be eligible for admission to a program at UWA, they must demonstrate satisfactory performance in a UWA-approved test of English. This is the case even if English is their first language. They must also have WA Certificate of Education in English, Literature or English as an additional language/dialect with scaled mark of 50 or above, in stage 2 or stage 3. TEE English/English Literature with scaled mark of 50 or above English as a Second Language with final mark of 66.60 or above (in 2007). There are different English language requirement for various states.
