This course allows students to match their academic interests with their career goals. It provides a set of general, portable and lasting skills vital to any career, such as the ability to research an issue, present an argument, analyse information, communicate clearly and relate well to people. The Asian studies major explores issues from a comparative perspective across a range of Asian countries, cultures (including music and literature), history, politics and societies. Asia's relations with Australia and the rest of the world are studied, and students can also take a closer look at particular Asian countries such as China, Japan or Korea or regions such as Southeast Asia.

Students must have academic Year 12, International Baccalaureate or equivalent academic qualification. VCE prerequisites include Units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English. International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites include a score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL. They must have achieved the following English language proficiency test results: IELTS (minimum test score of 6.5 overall; no individual band less than 6.0); Paper-based TOEFL (minimum test score of 580; a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 4.5); Internet-based TOEFL (a score of at least 90 overall; a Writing score of at least 22; no score lower than 20 on the other sections of the test); Cambridge English CAE (A grade); Cambridge English CEP (C grade).
