This course allows students to match their academic interests with their career goals. It provides a set of general, portable and lasting skills vital to any career, such as the ability to research an issue, present an argument, analyse information, communicate clearly and relate well to people. This major teaches Chinese language from beginners to advanced levels, including a stream for dialect speakers. Elective units are available in media studies, intellectual history and literature. In-country language study abroad programs are also available to students majoring in this area.

Students must have academic Year 12, International Baccalaureate or equivalent academic qualification. VCE prerequisites include Units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English. International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites include a score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL. They must have achieved the following English language proficiency test results: IELTS (minimum test score of 6.5 overall; no individual band less than 6.0); Paper-based TOEFL (minimum test score of 580; a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 4.5); Internet-based TOEFL (a score of at least 90 overall; a Writing score of at least 22; no score lower than 20 on the other sections of the test); Cambridge English CAE (A grade); Cambridge English CEP (C grade).
