This course covers key moments in the development of a number of disciplines such as audio-visual arts, literature, film and new media, architecture, landscape architecture and the impact of other art and design practice on the history of cultures. It encompasses studies in visual arts, literature, film and new media, architecture, landscape architecture and the impact of other art and design practice on the history of cultures. They learn to experience aesthetic pleasure through emotional intuition and intellectual learning is an essential means of exploring the serious issues of past and present cultures from many parts of the world including Europe, America, Asia and Australia. Students will attend weekly lectures which are supported by small group discussions and roundtables. Careers include professions in the academy, art education in schools, museums and tourism industries, and advertising, visual content management, marketing, film and television production and as art practitioners, curators, conservators and administrators in private and public galleries. In combination with other qualifications there are also recognized openings for art history graduates in art investment, art law, law enforcement, libraries, corporate business organizations (including visual resource companies and international auction houses) and government agencies (such as public art schemes and heritage management), the publishing industry and the antiquarian book trade. Graduates who complete a History of Art honors course to a sufficiently high standard may be admitted to the Master of Fine Arts in Curatorial Studies, which is a professionally recognized course.

Students must have completed Western Australian Universities Preparatory Program (WAUPP) with a score of 63, International Baccalaureate with a score of 29, French Baccalaureate with a score of 12, UWA Foundation Program (UWAFP) with a score of 66, GCE or Cambridge Advanced-level Examinations with a score of 8. To be eligible for admission to a program at UWA, they must demonstrate satisfactory performance in a UWA-approved test of English. This is the case even if English is their first language. They must also have WA Certificate of Education in English, Literature or English as an additional language/dialect with scaled mark of 50 or above, in stage 2 or stage 3. TEE English/English Literature with scaled mark of 50 or above English as a Second Language with final mark of 66.60 or above (in 2007). There are different English language requirement for various states.
