This course provides students the opportunity to develop as competent users of the Japanese language with explicit knowledge of Japanese society and culture. There are two main components of language study. The first is a focus on the acquisition of competence in the target language. Acquiring target language competence involves a wide range of knowledge and understanding of sociocultural conventions as well as skills in self-expression, both oral and written, and skills in comprehending other’s expression, both oral and written. The second component is the study of aspects of the cultures and societies associated with the Japanese language. These disciplines include linguistic, literary, cultural, historical and social productions. Via the study of the Japanese language and associated disciplines,it aim: to foster an awareness of Japan’s culture, history and society; to develop informed understanding of human experiences, cultures, and societies in Japan; to enable students to place contemporary Australian society and culture in an historical and comparative context vis a vis Japanese culture and society; to develop the skills of critical, creative, and imaginative thinking about Japanese culture and society; to promote the techniques and value of reasoned and open-minded discussion and debate; to nurture positive attitudes toward intercultural communication in general and with the Japanese; to promote learner autonomy.

Persyaratan masuk bagi mahasiswa internasional

Applicants need to have a qualification considered to be equivalent to Year 12 (completion of High School) in Australia. They should also satisfy the following English Language requirements: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall with a minimum score of 6.0 in each of the sub-tests of speaking, listening, reading and writing; TOEFL (IBT): 90 overall with a minimum score of 24 in writing; TOEFL (PBT): 577 overall with a minimum score of 5.0 in the Test of Written English (TWE); University English Entry Course (UEEC): successful completion of the UEEC with a grade of C+ (grade point 7.0) and a minimum score of 20 in the writing component; PTE (Academic) - Pearson Test of English academic version: 68 overall - not recognised for School of Education programs; successful completion of the ANU College Access Program with a minimum of 70 per cent overall.
