This course focuses on the preparation, interpretation and communication of accounting information essential to effective decision making within an organization. Students can choose to undertake focused study in either financial or management accounting, or complete a more generalized program of study covering a wide range of accounting subjects in greater depth. The major is designed to meet the accreditation requirements of the main professional accounting bodies, preparing them for entry into the workforce. This major is taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, workshops, and other in-class activities. At UWA, lecturers integrate leading research into their teaching, which is shaped by a current understanding of practical accounting issues. Several academic staff is heavily involved in the accounting profession and on state and national committees, are text book authors and are at the forefront of developments in the accounting tertiary sector, including the establishment of minimum academic standards for all accounting degrees in Australia. It offers a variety of career paths in the public sector, public accounting firms, small business and self-employment. Professional accountants are employed as company directors, board members, chief executive officers, partners in business and in the profession, as well as banking, company accounting, financial consulting, fund management, merchant banking, public accounting practice, stock broking and taxation. They can pursue further studies at honors level or undertake a generalist master’s degree such as the Master of Commerce or Master of Business Administration.

Students must have completed Western Australian Universities Preparatory Program (WAUPP) with a score of 63, International Baccalaureate with a score of 29, French Baccalaureate with a score of 12, UWA Foundation Program (UWAFP) with a score of 66, GCE or Cambridge Advanced-level Examinations with a score of 8. To be eligible for admission to a program at UWA, they must demonstrate satisfactory performance in a UWA-approved test of English. This is the case even if English is their first language. They must also have WA Certificate of Education in English, Literature or English as an additional language/dialect with scaled mark of 50 or above, in stage 2 or stage 3. TEE English/English Literature with scaled mark of 50 or above English as a Second Language with final mark of 66.60 or above (in 2007). There are different English language requirement for various states.
