The course is designed for students who wish to study computing in depth. The systems development major combines the study of these areas with basic training in software engineering and is aimed at students who want to focus on the engineering aspects of information technology. On completion, graduates may gain employment in a wide variety of roles such as specialist programmer, systems analyst, research scientist, consultant and IT management. Successful graduates often perform research and development in exciting areas such as artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, networking and cryptography, computer games, multimedia, and robotics.

Students must have academic Year 12, International Baccalaureate or equivalent academic qualification. VCE prerequisites include units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English, and a study score of at least 20 in mathematical methods (either) or specialist mathematics, or at least 35 in further mathematics. International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites include a score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL and a score of at least 3 in mathematics SL or 3 in further mathematics SL or 6 in mathematical studies SL or 3 in mathematics HL. They must have achieved the following English language proficiency test results: IELTS (minimum test score of 6.5 overall; no individual band less than 6.0); Paper-based TOEFL (minimum test score of 580; a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 4.5); Internet-based TOEFL (a score of at least 90 overall; a Writing score of at least 22; no score lower than 20 on the other sections of the test); Cambridge English CAE (A grade); Cambridge English CEP (C grade).
