This fascinating field of engineering involves the design, analysis, implementation and application of embedded computers and digital systems for a huge range of products and industries. Computer systems engineers are involved in large computer systems, desktop computers, high definition television and embedded computers for mobile phones, video games, virtual reality systems and smart domestic appliances. Employment opportunities exist in many industries, local and international, including telecommunications, computing, manufacturing, industrial control and automotive. Major employers include the professional services industry, retail, entertainment, health, transportation, banking, travel and financial services.

Students must have academic Year 12, International Baccalaureate or equivalent academic qualification. VCE prerequisites include units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English and a minimum ATAR of 70. International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites include a score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL, a score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL. They must have achieved the following English language proficiency test results: IELTS (minimum test score of 6.5 overall; no individual band less than 6.0); Paper-based TOEFL (minimum test score of 580; a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 4.5); Internet-based TOEFL (a score of at least 90 overall; a Writing score of at least 22; no score lower than 20 on the other sections of the test); Cambridge English CAE (A grade); Cambridge English CEP (C grade).
