This course investigates the spatial patterns of physical and human phenomena at local, national and global scales. It examines the patterns and processes of natural and built environments and human activity, how they change over time and how they interact. Physical geography is concerned with the patterns and processes in climate, landforms, soils, plants, animals as well as the impact of human activities on these systems. Human geography examines how people interact with the environment and about applying physical geography elements to human ends. Human geography involves applied studies in urban and rural settlement, location and land-use, human spatial behavior and demography. Geographical information science is the study of geographic information systems and remote-sensing for modeling, managing, analyzing and applying geo-referenced information in a variety of contexts. It is concerned with the interpretation and analysis of geographical information obtained from airborne and satellite images, land surveying, field observation and data systems. It has applications in earth, biological and environmental sciences, built environments, human settlements, planning and natural resources. Geographical sciences encompass a range of professional areas around the discipline of geography. From helping to design and manage cities to assessing, monitoring and managing coastal and outback environments, geographers have key roles in managing environmental systems and creating a livable environment. Geographers are employed to observe, analyse, interpret and report spatial patterns in natural resources, the built environment and socio-economic systems. Expertise in geographical sciences leads to a number of exciting opportunities for employment in private companies and government agencies, both in Australia and internationally in areas such as land-use and resource management agencies. Economics majors are business and industry, economics and public policy, international trade and finance, natural resources and environment, quantitative methods.

Students must have completed Queensland Year 12 (or equivalent) English, Mathematics B, and either Chemistry or Physics. They should also satisfy the English language requirements: IELTS (overall score of 6.5; writing score of 6); TOEFL - (Computer based score of 237; Essay writing score of 4.5); TOEFL - (Paper based score of 570; TWE (Test of written English) score of 5); TOEFL - (Internet Based (IBT) overall score of 90; writing score of 21).
