This major focuses on the relationship between human activities and the natural and built environment, and humanity’s reliance on the earth’s natural resources. Humanity has an ever-changing relationship with the natural environment. Technological advances to address these problems are rarely free of environmental costs and professionals working in this field must also negotiate contemporary political disputes. Graduates find employment in non-government organizations, government, research and development, business and consultancies. Employment specialization areas include: biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and adaptation, disaster risk management, international development, natural resource management, rural and urban planning, social policy, and sustainable urban development. Upon completion of this major students will have the option of completing a fourth honors year, which includes a research project. Selective entry into the honors program is based on their results at undergraduate level. They also have the option of pursuing graduate coursework programs or research in areas such as geography and the environment.

Applicants must have successfully completed the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or an equivalent qualification. International applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria in English language requirements: achieved a study score of at least 25 in English/English Language/Literature, or at least 30 in ESL; TOEFL paper based test score of 577 or more including a score of 4.5 in the Test of Written English, computer based test score of 233 or more including an essay rating score of 4.5, internet based test score of 90 or more with no band score less than 21; an overall band score of 6.5 or more in the Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS), with no bands less than 6.0; satisfactorily complete secondary studies and gain the required score in an approved final-year English subject; within the last two years have satisfactorily completed at least the first year of a tertiary course taught and assessed entirely in English; or within the last five years have satisfactorily completed at least a two year tertiary course taught and assessed entirely in English.
