This program will develop knowledge in specialist areas of computing; skills which are fundamental to research; and competence in the communication of knowledge and ideas, both orally and in reports. An honours degree provides the opportunity to continue undergraduate studies at a higher level, specialising in a particular area of interest. An honours degree is a rigorous and scholarly program of further study, which develops a student's ability to generate new knowledge and distill new ideas out of existing knowledge. Candidates with honours are particularly sought after by employers and can choose from more interesting research and development positions because of their extra skills and proven abilities. It can also provide a pathway to research higher degree study. Completing an honours degree involves an additional full-time year of study (or the equivalent) following completion of a bachelor program, or alternatively additional study with a research element included in the final year or years of a bachelor program.

Students should have Bachelor of Information Technology degree or Bachelor of Informatics degree passed at distinction level or higher, or a qualification deemed equivalent. They may be required to undertake preliminary study in the current Bachelor of Information Technology undergraduate program before commencing the Honours program. Students should also have an overall IELTS band score of 6.0 (with no individual band score of less than 5.0), or a TOEFL score of 550 (Internet-based score of 79 or computer-based score of 213), including a TWE of 4.
