This course provides the necessary theoretical framework required to price complex financial products such as derivative contracts. Mathematical finance has given tremendous impetus to research in and applications of probability theory and some other mathematics areas. The skills acquired through this major equip students to continue to postgraduate research in mathematical finance or applied probability. These skills, along with a solid computational foundation which can be obtained through courses available in the Major, and form an integral component of the attributes necessary to work as a “quant” in the banking and finance industry.

Students must have the following requirements: successful completion of 144 units including a minimum of 48 units of 2000 level science or 3000 level science courses relevant to the proposed field of Honors study, of which a minimum of 24 units must be 3000 level science courses; attainment of an average of 2 for the 48 units, where HD = 4, D = 3, CR = 2, P = 0 and the recommendation of the Head of School concerned, in the light of availability of resources and appropriate supervision. Students must have completed an approved tertiary preparation course or alternative entry scheme; they will be assessed on the results of that scheme alone, unless they have undertaken subsequent study. International students whose native is not English should have the following English qualifications: Academic IELTS - an overall score of 6.5 with at least 6 in each component of the test; TOEFL (paper based test) - a score of 570 with TWE score of 4.5; TOEFL (computer based test) - a score of 230 with Essay score of 4.5 or TOEFL (internet based test) - a score of 90, with a minimum of 20 in all four sections.
