This degree is ideal for those who are passionate about animal science. Students study a wide range of topics including anatomy, biochemistry, animal health, animal diversity, immunology, microbiology, physiology, animal ecology and animal biotechnology. The course structure ensures a strong background in the core sciences together with a focus on animal health and ecology. Students will benefit from studying animal health in a regional location and context; and also focusing on key issues of international relevance. The laboratory based aspects of the course are supported by fieldwork and case studies at nearby sites such as farming and breeding enterprises, animal health practices, and natural habitats with wildlife populations. The choice of an applied research project or an industry based placement in the final year of the course will develop the technical expertise and hands-on skills required for higher degree research or employment. The inclusion of six elective units in the program provides flexibility for students to tailor studies to specific interests and careers or research objectives. Graduates have a wide range of career opportunities in animal management and welfare, animal biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, research institutes and centres, diagnostic laboratories, animal quarantine and disease surveillance, wild animal research and management. This degree provides an ideal preparation for entry into veterinary medicine. This course does not qualify students to practice veterinary science, but does provide a strong preparation for further studies in this field.

Students must have English (Year 12), any mathematics (Australian equivalent Year 11) qualification. VCE prerequisites include units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English and a minimum ATAR of 70. International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites include a score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL. They must have achieved the following English language proficiency test results: IELTS (minimum test score of 6.5 overall; no individual band less than 6.0); Paper-based TOEFL (minimum test score of 580; a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 4.5); Internet-based TOEFL (a score of at least 90 overall; a Writing score of at least 22; no score lower than 20 on the other sections of the test); Cambridge English CAE (A grade); Cambridge English CEP (C grade).
