The study of sport and outdoor recreation is tailor-made for people who want to develop their knowledge and passion for sport and outdoor recreation, and who have an interest in the relationship between physical activity, recreation and leisure, health and wellbeing, sustainability, leadership and education, and sports and movement studies. Throughout the course students combine in-depth academic study with exciting professional placements and practical fieldwork. Students undertake an in-depth analysis of the theories of sport and outdoor recreation plus complete a sequence in another discipline selected from a range of business, science, arts and education subjects. Professional placements are conducted in coaching and instruction, leadership and programming, and sport education. Fieldwork placements in various sport and outdoor education settings throughout the course focus on the employment and training needs of those employed in the expanding sport and outdoor recreation industries. Both the classroom and fieldwork activities take advantage of Monash's dedicated Health and Wellbeing Precinct based at the Peninsula campus, with great sporting and outdoor facilities available on or near the campus. Graduates work in areas including community sport and sports coaching, local government, sport and outdoor recreation, sports training and development, recreation and leisure, commercial recreation, sports marketing and administration.

Applicants must have completed equivalent to Australian Year 12. They must also have completed the following prerequisite: VCE prerequisites: units 1 and 2-two units of mathematics (any) or Units 3 and 4-mathematics (any). Units 3 and 4-a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English. International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites: a score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL, and a score of at least 3 in any mathematics subject. Also they should demonstrate their English language proficiency with a minimum overall IELTS test score of at least 6.5 with individual band scores required at 6.5 for Reading, 6.5 for Listening, 6.0 for Writing and 6.0 for Speaking. In the internet-based TOEFL, an overall score of at least 90 with at least 22 in the written section and at least 20 in the speaking, reading and listening sections.
