This course has a longstanding tradition and is widely recognized as a leader in sociological scholarship in Australia. Students who complete a major in sociology at UQ develop a distinctive set of skills and experiences that are highly sought after by employers. These include rigorous training in research methods and an ability to apply critical thinking and evidence-based research to understand a broad range of phenomena, such as social change, modern society and culture, contemporary social institutions and the relationship between people and the environment.

Students should have completed Year 12 or equivalent English, Mathematics A or B or C. They should also satisfy the English language requirements: IELTS (overall score of 6.5; writing score of 6); TOEFL - (Computer based score of 237; Essay writing score of 4.5); TOEFL - (Paper based score of 570; TWE (Test of written English) score of 5); TOEFL - (Internet Based (IBT) overall score of 90; writing score of 21).
