This dual degree program provides students with a wide range of majors across science and arts. Students can structure their program within each degree component to include majors in their area of interest and a range of electives. The major draws on the established reputation of the BA to prepare graduates for jobs where critical understanding, flexibility, research, analytical and communication skills are required, including careers in mass communications, the media and journalism. The Journalism and Mass Communication major provides a broader basis for careers in mass communications, the media and journalism as well as a wide range of other occupations. They can also combine with science majors biochemistry and molecular biology, biomedical science, chemistry, computer science, ecology, food science / extended major, food science and nutrition, genetics, geographical sciences, geological sciences / extended major, marine science, mathematics, microbiology, physics / extended major, plant science, psychology / extended major, statistics, zoology.

Students must have completed Queensland Year 12 or equivalent English, mathematics B plus one of chemistry or physics. They should also satisfy the English language requirements: IELTS (overall score of 6.5; writing score of 6); TOEFL - (Computer based score of 237; Essay writing score of 4.5); TOEFL - (Paper based score of 570; TWE (Test of written English) score of 5); TOEFL - (Internet Based (IBT) overall score of 90; writing score of 21).

This University was established by an Act of State Parliament on December 10, 1909 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Queensland’s separation from the colony of New South Wales. Its foundation four months later made it the first university in the State and the fifth in the nation. This St Lucia campus is considered by many to be Australia's most attractive. Located seven kilometres from the city's heart on a magnificent 114-hectare site in a bend of the Brisbane River, the campus has expansive landscaped grounds and many playing fields. Its hub is a semi-circle of cloistered buildings enclosing the Great Court, which is on the Queensland Heritage Register as well as the Register of the National Trust of Queensland. The Alumni Teaching Garden in College Road near the river is primarily a teaching and research facility but also includes a quiet area of lush rainforest with public walkways. The adjacent Una Prentice Memorial Garden, bounded by Roberston Walk and Ferry Walk, surrounds two of the three lakes on campus.

This college provide students with individual study bedrooms containing a single bed, desk, chair and storage space for clothing and other belongings. Some College rooms have attached bathrooms (ensuites), but the more usual arrangement is to share the bathroom with other students. Colleges provide educational amenities such as group study rooms, computer labs, printers and photocopiers and tutorials that are in addition to the standard university classes; and recreational facilities such as common rooms, landscaped gardens, gymnasiums, practice courts and music rooms. There are 10 Residential Colleges based on the grounds of the St Lucia campus within easy walking distance of all teaching and research facilities, but they are not owned or managed by the University.
