In this course, students will gain skills and knowledge in nutritionally balanced food for young children; legal and ethical frameworks; children’s development needs; first aid; occupational health and safety; care for babies; working with culturally diverse clients and co-workers; children’s play and learning and interacting effectively with children. Students who successfully complete this course may apply to articulate into the Diploma of Children's Services (Early Childhood Education and Care) through the diploma application/selection process. Graduates are considered to be a Level Two Trained Child Care Assistant on completion of the course. Work involves caring for infants and young children up to six years of age generally under the direct supervision of a qualified child care worker, or independently, depending on the type of children's service.

Students must hold a Working with Children Check and satisfactory Police Check. All applicants must attend an interview and sit a test. International students must have any one of the following requirements: NMIT English placement test; academic IELTS 5.5 or higher; academic IELTS 5.0 (NMIT to offer 10 weeks ELICOS prior); academic IELTS 4.5 (NMIT to offer 20 weeks ELICOS prior); general IELTS 6.0; general IELTS 5.5 (NMIT to offer 10 weeks ELICOS prior); general IELTS 5.0 (NMIT to offer 20 weeks ELICOS prior); for IELTS scores less than 4.5, NMIT can offer up to 50 weeks ELICOS; TOEFL test score of 530 (paper-based), 197 (computer-based) or 71 (internet-based) or Pearson test of English - academic (PTE) 46.
