This course offers students the opportunity to complete a Diploma in Language at the same time they are taking pretty well any other degree at Flinders - from Science or Psychology to Law or Business. By adding one extra year to their normal study program for the degree, they will graduate with two qualifications. Students can undertake the Diploma in Language if they have been admitted to any undergraduate degree of the University. The Diploma in Language aims to: foster the development of proficient levels of linguistic, socio-cultural and communicative competencies in French, Indonesian, Italian, Modern Greek or Spanish; expose students to a wide body of specific and cross-disciplinary knowledge relative to linguistic and cultural knowledges and practices (grammar, literature, translation, cinema, etc) relative to the language of study; develop students ability to analyse and respond to written and visual texts of varying difficulty relative to the language of study. Italy is one of the seven wealthiest nations in the world and an essential tourist destination. Italy is a major trading partner with Australia (and increasingly with South Australia) and the Italian language is a pathway to employment. Italian is the second most widely spoken language in Australia, with more than half a million Italian Australians using it every day. Italy has a long cultural and scientific heritage embracing theatre, art, music, literature, design and technology. A knowledge of Italian can be of benefit in fields such as tourism, hospitality, music, fashion, design, architecture, science, education, technology, government services, international law, commerce and sport.

Students can undertake the Diploma in Language if they have been admitted to any undergraduate degree of the University. The Diploma of Language is only available in combination with another undergraduate course. They should have IELTS (academic) score of 6.0 (6.0 in speaking and writing); TOEFL (paper) score of 550 (TWE 4.5); TOEFL (internet) score of 80 (20 in writing and speaking); Cambridge (CAE) Grade of B or higher; Cambridge (CPE) Grade of C or higher; Pearson English Test overall score of 59 with no communication score less than 53.
