This program has been designed for those who hold positions as specialist visual merchandisers in the retail industry or those wishing to begin a career in the visual merchandising sector. The role of the visual merchandiser may involve: working as a member of a national, state or store-based team; designing and installing visual merchandising displays in the exhibition industry; and/or self employment as a visual merchandiser. Major study areas include design, design theory, digital art and design, graphic arts, retail merchandising, visual merchandising, product presentation, retail illustration, exhibition design, history of design, merchandising and category presentation, and store design. Upon completion of this course, they will have an understanding of the visual merchandising industry including: the principles and elements of display; the development and design of language for the purpose of product presentation; the design and construction of props; working to an industry brief. They can find employment as a visual merchandiser in the areas of retail store visual merchandising or display departments, visual merchandising consultancy and supply companies, retail merchandising, photo styling, display production companies or exhibition design.

Students should have any one of the following requirements: Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Upper Intermediate level certificate at the Pathways level (EAP 4: Pathways -60 per cent); or, obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 5.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 5.0; or, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 527 (with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.5); or, a TOEFL Computer-based) minimum score of 196 (with Written Writing score of 4.5); or, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 71 with no band less than 18.
