This major is divided into a clinical training component and a seminar program, together with written assignments and attendance at lectures, seminars, and tutorials. The clinical component is performed at the University Dental School, School Dental Clinics and the Royal Children's Hospital. Students perform specialist-level treatment for children at these centres under the supervision of various dental experts. Experience gained by the student include preventive, restorative, periodontics, surgical, and minor orthodontic dental treatment of normal and medically compromised children using, when necessary, different sedation techniques and general anaesthesia. Treatment of children with intellectual and physical disabilities, including craniofacial anomalies, is included in the specialty training. In addition to the seminar program in paediatric dentistry, basic and clinical sciences relevant to the discipline are covered. These include biology of the teeth, oral diagnosis and dental traumas in children, craniofacial anatomy, development and morphology, oral pathology, pain control and behaviour management.

Students must have completed Bachelor of Dentistry Science (Honours I or IIA) or equivalent and minimum two years of graduate clinical experience. Overseas trained applicants may be required to undertake a theory and clinical skills assessment. They should also satisfy the English language requirements: IELTS overall 7; reading 7; writing 7; speaking 7; listening 7; TOEFL - (Computer based score of 237; Essay writing score of 4.5); TOEFL - (Paper based score of 570; TWE (Test of written English) score of 5); TOEFL - (Internet Based (IBT) overall score of 90; writing score of 21).
