This course is offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences for purely research only. Prior to formal application, intending applicants need to give consideration to the specific research topic they wish to investigate. This should be determined in consultation with a member of the academic staff of the Faculty to see whether the Faculty can provide the appropriate supervision. The candidate must be familiar enough with the relevant research area to be able to undertake specialised study in that field. The Doctor of Philosophy (Humanities and Social Sciences) program provides students with the necessary research skills for academic careers in the university or research sector, or professional employment.

Students must have four-year honours degree (first class or 2A), or a research masters degree or a qualification or combination of qualifications deemed to be equivalent to the above by the HDR Committee. Candidates who have completed more than nine months of Masters by research and who meet the requirements for admission to PhD candidature may apply to be admitted to confirmed PhD candidature. They must also have achieved an IELTS score of 6.5.
