This program at Sydney Nursing School provides an opportunity for intensive research training in a supportive and collaborative environment. Doctoral students engage with a community of research scholars to develop their expertise in their chosen field and to contribute to disciplinary knowledge in that area. With supervision, students undertake their own research project, and complete a significant thesis with a substantially original component. During candidature, students attend a range of workshops and other research activities and regularly contribute to the intellectual life of Sydney Nursing School through seminar presentations and participation in meetings. Upon completion, students can pursue careers such as academic, researcher, nursing management positions, fieldwork officers. Research areas are maternal and women's health; cancer and palliative care; chronic diseases and co-morbidities; intensive care, trauma and emergency; mental health. Across these pillars, candidates may work in the areas of patient and health outcomes, experience of illness and the support of family and carers, health systems, services and policies, primary health care and developments in nursing and midwifery.

Students should normally hold a relevant masters degree with a significant research component or equivalent work-related research experience or research publications; or a bachelors degree with first or second class honours. Alternatively, an applicant may be admitted having passed a qualifying examination at a standard equivalent to the bachelor degree with first or second class honours. They must satisfy IELTS minimum result of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 7.0 in each band or TOEFL minimum result of 600 overall including a minimum result of 5.0 in writing or IBT minimum result of 100 overall including a minimum result of 24 in reading, listening and speaking and 25 in writing.
