This program embraces a diverse range of research interests which are reflected in the studies undertaken by staff and doctoral candidates. Current research interests of the School include: Ethnographies of classroom teacher assessment practices, Ideologies and philosophies of museums, Cognitive realism and conditions for authentic artistic practice in educational settings, Museums as educational institutions, Histories of Australian art education, The political nature of curriculum reform in national and state contexts.

Students must have completed a four-year Bachelor's degree with first or upper second class honours from an Australian University; a completed Masters by Research degree, or equivalent academic qualification(s) approved by the appropriate Faculty Higher Degree Committee. In exceptional circumstances, the Faculty may consider for admission applicants who do not have qualifications equivalent to a four-year honours degree, if sufficient evidence is provided of research experience that clearly demonstrates exceptional research skills and the ability to undertake the proposed research program. They must also satisfy the following English language requirements: IELTS overall score of 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in each of the sub-tests of speaking, listening, reading and writing; TOEFL - Internet-based Test (iBT) overall score of 90 with a minimum score of 24 in writing; TOEFL - Paper-based Test (PBT) overall score of 577 with a minimum score of 5.0 in the Test of Written English (TWE); successful completion of the UNSW Institute of Languages University English Entry Course with a grade of C+ (grade point 7.0) and a minimum score of 20 in the writing component; overall score of 68 in Pearson Test of English academic version and successful completion of the ANU College Access Program with a minimum of 70 per cent overall.
