This program has a core of design studios, and technical and professional subjects. The design studios comprise 50 per cent of the course and culminate in a research thesis. Architectural design is conceived in broad terms as the creative invention of architectural futures, integrating aesthetic, technological, programmatic, environmental and social issues in the production of buildings for the 21st century and beyond. The studios are both project focused and research-led with an emphasis on rigorous analysis and creative production of ideas. Beyond these design studios, students will be asked to specialize in one or more areas of: digital architecture, history and conservation, architectural production and practice, sustainable architecture, social and cultural critique and Asia/Pacific architecture. This program provides graduates with: design skills that will contribute to the improvement of college built environment; a grounding of architectural history, theory and technology enabling them to develop innovative architecture, relevant to time and place, people and culture; the skills to manage an architectural practice and work within teams; the ability to use resources, materials and technologies to produce responsible and sustainable architecture. Graduates find employment in private architectural firms where they work on residential, commercial and institutional projects. They may also work in government departments where they assist in the development of major projects. Some graduates run their own architectural practice while others move into related careers, such as industrial design, furniture design, interior design, landscape design, urban design, urban planning, facility management, project management and development, conservation and heritage management and public art.

The Selection Committee will evaluate the applicant's ability to pursue the course successfully using the following criteria - For 200 point program: completion of the Bachelor of Planning and Design (Architecture) or Bachelor of Architectural Studies at the University of Melbourne between 2005 and 2010; and completion of at least 16 weeks of documented relevant full-time professional work experience; or an undergraduate degree with a major in architecture or architectural studies with a weighted average of at least 65 per cent in the final two years, or equivalent. For 300 point program: applicants should have obtained an undergraduate degree in any discipline with at least H3 (65 per cent) in the final two years, or equivalent; completion of one design studio subject and one art/architecture/built environment/design history subject at undergraduate level, or equivalent. International applicants must fulfill the following English language requirements: IELTS (academic English only) score of 6.5 (no band less than 6.0); TOEFL (paper-based test) score of 577 plus TWE 4.5; TOEFL (computer-based test) score of 233 plus 4.5 essay rating; TOEFL (internet-based test) score of 90 plus no band less than 21.
