This course work at the molecular level to explore the development of large scale processes using microbial, plant or animal cells. Students develop their expertise in this specialisation under the guidance of staff known internationally for their research in areas such as dairy manufacturing innovations and the production of biofuels. Throughout the course, they benefit from interaction with industry representatives and in their final year, work on both a design and research project. Careers opportunities for biomolecular engineers exist in various industries including petrochemical, minerals and energy.

Applicants should have completed a four-year undergraduate degree in an engineering discipline with at least 65 per cent (University of Melbourne equivalent) average; or a three-year undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline with at least 65 per cent (University of Melbourne equivalent) average and at least three years of documented professional work experience since graduation related to the undergraduate degree. International applicants must fulfill any one of the following English language requirements: IELTS (academic English only) score of 6.5 (with no band less than 6.0); or TOEFL (paper-based test) score of 577 plus TWE 4.5, TOEFL (computer-based test) score of 233 plus 4.5 essay writing and TOEFL (internet-based test) score of 79 (writing 21, speaking 18, reading and listening 13 each); or Pearson Test of English (academic) score of 58-64 inclusive and no communicative skill below 50.
