This program in telecommunications engineering is concerned with the design, planning, commissioning and monitoring of complex telecommunications networks and broadcasting equipment. It will cover aspects of theory and application for a broad range of topics including satellite communication systems, multi-service networks for global Internet services, internet protocols and optical networks. Students may also engage in areas of study such as wireless engineering, optical communication systems and error control coding. Career opportunities for telecommunications engineering graduates can be found with providers such as Telstra, Optus Unwired, Vodafone, AAPT and vendors like Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Nokia, NEC, Computer companies such as Microsoft, IBM, Google, network management, research and application of that research in CSIRO, NI CTA and universities, multimedia and IT companies, design of equipment and telecom devices, military and defence applications.

Students should hold a bachelor’s degree with credit average results in a major sequence in any aspect of information technology; or a Bachelor of Engineering with credit average results in a major sequence in computer engineering, software engineering or telecommunications engineering; or have completed the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology at the University of Sydney with credit average results or above; or have satisfactorily completed the Graduate Diploma in Computing at the University of Sydney. They must satisfy IELTS minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band or TOEFL minimum result of 577 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in writing or IBT minimum result of 90 overall including a minimum result of 22 in reading, listening and speaking and 23 in writing.
