Flinders University's Bedford Park campus is situated within the foothills of the Southern Mt Lofty Ranges. Prior to the establishment of the campus in 1963, the area was part of a larger grazing and dairy property. Since the campus was established, the number of buildings has expanded to accommodate the increased student numbers. The Flinders University campus now represents a modified urban environment with significant built-up areas, but has retained a variety of open spaces. Flinders University was created in 1966, at a time when new universities were being established across Australia as part of a major expansion of university education. This gave opportunities for access to people from a broader range of backgrounds than had attended universities in the past. It also helped to meet Australia’s need for an increasing number of highly trained and skilled personnel in a period of industrial development and economic growth. Flinders has built a strong reputation for quality and innovation in its courses and in its teaching. It was the first university in the world to have a bachelor course in nanotechnology, and the first in Australia to offer a graduate entry medical course. Flinders staff received a number of national awards for teaching excellence, including the Prime Minister’s Award for University Teacher of the Year in 2004 and 2006.

Flinders is the only South Australian University offering on-campus accommodation in the Adelaide metropolitan area. There are two options: catered accommodation in University Hall; self-catered accommodation in Deirdre Jordan Village. Both offer high quality facilities and good opportunities to socialise with fellow students. Temporary accommodation is also available to assist students when they first arrive in Adelaide. If students prefer to live off-campus, Flinders Housing can help there too. They run a free, up-to-date accommodation service to show the students what's available on the rental market and provide advice on their rights and responsibilities.
