This program is designed for university graduates wanting to pursue specialist expertise in marine science with a focus on sustainability and management. Students have access to the National Marine Science Centre teaching and research facility in Coffs Harbor, which is equipped with purpose-built laboratories and field equipment. It has both a theoretical and a practical focus, with field studies in a range of coastal and marine environments, including the Solitary Islands Marine Park and the Great Barrier Reef. The curriculum is strongly influenced by the needs of industry and potential employers. Students can also select to enroll in research project units to undertake detailed research on marine projects to enhance their learning and career opportunities. If students complete 50 per cent of their masters degree by research, they would be eligible to enroll in a PhD research degree. The course focuses on marine science sustainability and management. Specialist marine studies include marine ecosystem management, survey design, marine communities, marine mammals, global climate change, marine pollution, coral reefs and marine research projects. The degree is designed so that students can integrate studies with their existing employment and focuses on quality science and best practice professional skill. The degree is ideal for those seeking to develop careers in fields such as: marine management and ecology, national marine park management, industry research into sustainable practices, marine based tourism and marine research.

Students should have obtained a degree considered by the University to be equivalent to an Australian bachelor degree with second class honours. Students must also demonstrate the educational preparation and capacity to pursue a research degree. This may be through their general and professional qualifications. In addition, students should have fulfilled English language requirements with IELTS score of 6.5 overall (no less than 6.0 in any band) and TOEFL/TWE score of 580/5.0.
