This program provides students with advanced, cutting-edge theoretical knowledge in their chosen area of specialization, together with the practical and research skills necessary for employment in the industry and/or research laboratories. The knowledge and skills that students are equipped with will enable graduates to be job-ready. High achieving students may also be eligible for entry into research higher degree programs. The Microbiology specialization provides an education in a variety of topics that together form a dynamic science and prepare students directly for employment. The merging of microbiology with modern molecular biology techniques and biotechnology makes for exciting, evolving careers in research, industry, government and academia. Participation in 'hands-on' laboratory experiments and frontier research is emphasized so that graduates will have the practical experience and expertise needed for their future careers. This education, especially the technical training learned in the laboratories, will prepare students for employment in research, quality control, or hospital laboratories and for work with advanced techniques and instruments. Microbiology graduates are known to work in research and government laboratories that develop genetic engineering and biotechnology, solve health and environmental problems, create food and industrial technologies, and use microbial processes to produce new products.

Students should have completed a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized University (or another tertiary education institution of equivalent standing) with a minimum Grade Point Average of 4.0 (using a 7.0 scale) or hold a Graduate Certificate in a related discipline with a minimum Grade Point Average of 4.0 (using a 7.0 scale). International students whose native is not English should have an IELTS score of 6.0 with no sub-score below 5.5 or a TOEFL score of 550.
