This programme is the discipline of applying advanced analytical methods to aid better decision-making. It uses mathematical modeling, analysis, and optimisation in a holistic manner to design and analyse complex systems, and in the process, improve knowledge of such systems. Operations research (OR) techniques have been applied in areas as diverse as manufacturing, logistics, telecommunications, healthcare, finance, public sector, and military. Commonly used tools include linear programming, dynamic programming, queuing theory, simulation and inventory theory. The programme relies on scientific methods of research, to focus on operations (activities) within an organisation, and more often than not, attempts to find a best solution. An Operations research (OR) study can only be conducted by a group of individuals, trained in areas such as engineering, business administration, statistics, mathematics, and special techniques of Operations research (OR). It relies on and, at the same time, helps advance the mathematics of optimisation, applied probability and statistics. Students are also required to attend classes and pass the examinations to earn at least 18 AU (for example six three-AU courses) in PhD study. They will have to undergo a Qualifying Examination as well as a Confirmation Exercise. Upon the completion of the research, the student is required to submit a thesis on their research for examination. For this programme, there is also an oral examination on the subject matter on their thesis and other related subjects.

Applicant should have completed a bachelor's degree with honours of at least a second class upper level or equivalent or a master's degree (research-based) from a reputable university. For international applicants whose mother tongue is not English, a TOEFL score of greater than or equal to 570 (paper-based)/greater than or equal to 230 (computer-based)/greater than or equal to 88 (internet-based) is required and a minimum of IELTS score of 6.0 is required to replace TOEFL. They are also required to have a GRE score of greater than or equal to 1200/3.5. Applicants from India may use the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score of at least 90 per cent in place of GRE.
