Ringkasan program

Students take 4 course-units per academic year, and must pass at least three to proceed to the following year; non-language courses are available within the department and students can also take one open option per year (courses outside the Africa department and not named in the actual degree); they can elect to take a maximum 2 cognate courses in other departments, e.g., Development Studies, Social Anthropology; language study: Amharic; Hausa or Swahili (includes: grammar; translation; conversation; study of set books and other texts); combined with the study of aspects of culture in Africa; focus on the cultures of Sub-Saharan Africa: literature; art; performance and religion-philosophy.

Modul program

Year 1: Students take 1 unit in Hausa or Swahili, 2 compulsory units on culture and language in Africa, and 1 open option unit from a cognate subject/discipline; optional courses; contemporary African literature; history in African and Caribbean literature; African language literatures (oral and written); representations and transformations: South African drama and film; the structure of Bantu languages; theory and practice of Swahili translation; Religions of Africa; religion in Africa; Extended essay in African studies; independent study project in African studies; directed study of an African language; black urban studies; introduction to Pan-Africanism. Year 2: Students take 2 units in Hausa or Swahili, and 2 non-language/culture courses (1 or 2 from the list of options, or an open option). Year 3: Hausa: 2 terms intensive language/culture courses at a northern Nigerian university; students conduct research and collect data which forms the basis for writing up a Year Abroad Project of 10,000 words on their return.
