Students register in the first instance for the MPhil qualification and, following successful upgrade, for PhD (a total of 3 years); following discussion with the Director of Studies students are assigned a 1st supervisor and a 2nd supervisor with whom students plan a programme of research and with whom students have regular tutorials to support study throughout the 3 years; research may combine the practice, theory and /or history of the specialist area and students are guided in their study to define clearly and persuasively what is original and innovative about the chosen topic and how best to present and disseminate arguments and findings, whether this is substantially a written thesis or via a combination of practice (for example, exhibition, installation) and text-based critique; because of the individual nature of study, requirements (for example, for studio space or other specialist resources) are discussed with a supervisor who are able to advise on availability; as well as tutorials with supervisors, students participate in a programme of research methods training; in the 1st year of registration, there are 3 separate weeks attendance in London at the University of the Arts (UAL) Research Methods Training; this course is subject to validation
