The 1st year begins with an overview of the use of biomaterials in medicine and other scientific disciplines; students learn about the structure and design of materials and become involved in short projects that look at the application of materials; coursework involves looking at materials in the living world, mechanical properties and structure of materials; in addition, the course incorporates a detailed study of cell biology, biochemistry, anatomy and physiology; mathematics, computing and communication skills are also covered; in the 2nd year, the course covers cell and tissue interactions; the biocompatibility of materials in the body is considered in detail; of specific interest is tissue repair and regenerative medicine, including the use of stem cells; the processing, chemistry and characterisation of materials are covered in greater detail; in year 3, advanced topics are offered through choice of options; an extensive final year project enables students to develop further practical and analytical skills.
