Year 1 of the economics degree lays the grounding for studies, equipping students with the fundamental techniques needed; introduces the hottest up-to-date topics in the field; in years 2 and 3 students apply the skills learned to measuring the performance of economic systems large and small; students also start to be introduced to the intricacies of probability and prediction, and the problems of uncertainty; mathematics gives students a broad and integrated introduction to the basic mathematics that should be known by a mathematics graduate; a thorough knowledge of mathematics is essential for a complete understanding of the sciences, and has become increasingly important with the development of new areas of application in the physical and biological sciences, engineering and social studies.
