This course combines the critical and historical study of film with a thorough introduction to digital filmmaking; it gives students a strong basis for a career in the moving image industries, teaching or further academic study; level 1 is the foundation year; introducing students to the fundamental properties of film, such as: cinematography; editing; sound and narrative; modules include film language,;British film and TV and Hollywood in the studio era; in production students learn core digital film skills using industry standard equipment and develop an aesthetic appreciation of the screen image; level 2 is the year of the toolkit; students have the opportunity to develop their critical vocabulary in film, as well as become familiar with European cinema, the documentary tradition and the process of film adaptation; contemporary Hollywood is also a key area of study; production will focus on fiction filmmaking; level 3 is the research and creation year; opportunities for self-directed learning and autonomy are maximised; modules on offer include: theories of spectatorship; aesthetics of world cinema; independent American cinema; interpretation in film and TV; in production students will have the chance to make a short experimental film, and complete a documentary project to near-professional standards; at level 3 students may also do work-based learning or produce an independent study of a film company.
