The course is structured as a full-time scheme of study, incorporating both theory and practical components over 3 years; over the duration of this course students spend 1 third in clinical practice engaged in work based learning; in year 1 students are introduced to the basics of healthcare science and study both the cardiac and vascular division and the respiratory and sleep division; thereafter students specialise in 1 or other of these divisions in years 2 to 3; in ear 2 students begin to specialise in physiological sciences selecting cardiac and vascular or respiratory and sleep, with the focus of the year being on techniques and methodologies; in year 3 students apply everything they have learned about healthcare science, technologies and methodologies to the practice of physiological sciences.Year 1: professional Practice 1; physics, informatics and mathematics for healthcare science; anatomy and physiology for healthcare science; health and disease; cardiovascular basics for healthcare science; and respiratory basics for healthcare science.Year 2: professional practice 2; pathophysiology of common cardiovascular and respiratory conditions; electromedical instrumentation; scientific methods in healthcare research; ambulatory monitoring and stress testing; electrocardiography; the measurement and interpretation of pulmonary function; basic sleep investigation and therapy; and work based training 1.Year 3: professional practice 3; basic pacing, invasive cardiac diagnostic testing and monitoring; diagnosis and management of congenital and acquired cardiac and vascular disease; blood gas physiology and measurement; the assessment and treatment of sleep disorders; challenge testing and treatment in respiratory medicine; work based training 2; and undergraduate major project.
