This course allows students to critically explore ways in which new media forms and practices are being used to connect people for civic, social and community purposes; specifically how journalistic platforms are facilitating civic engagement among citizens with shared interests and enabling them to take action on issues of local, regional or global concern; 'Politics' in this context refers to a partisan politics (e.g. the news reporting of elections and parliamentary processes) as well as the politics of everyday citizenship in democratic societies; students are encouraged to develop critical perspectives, enabling them to re-invigorate traditional thinking about news and journalism; they are equipped with an understanding of how to carry out research enquiries and/or journalistic investigations of topics relevant to their interests.
