There is a great emphasis on choice, reflected in the broad range of courses, including linguistic studies, film and television studies, social and political studies, and literary studies (allowing students to specialise or opt for more general coverage); the year abroad provides an opportunity to improve linguistic and cultural proficiency in a chosen language and to demonstrate an ability to work independently over a sustained period; the administrative organisation of the year abroad is carried out by the international exchange administrator, and students are assigned a supervisor who looks after learners during the year.

Year 2: English language; language 2; managing research and learning; Britain and the evolving EU; language and society in the German-speaking world; globalisation: (economics, politics, culture and the nation state); introduction to international relations; political theory A; gender, race and nation in modern Latin America; immigration, race and ethnicity in France; French post-war thought; media perspectives on post-1968 Germany; metropolitan cultures (Vienna and Berlin); ethnography for language learners; teaching English as a 2nd/foreign language; culture and society in Portugal and Brazil; gender and society; myths and realities of contemporary Spain. Year 3: English language; language 2; final-year modern languages dissertation; discourses of identity (a study of identity formation in border communities in the contemporary and former Germany/ies); language teaching theory and practice; globalisation and world politics; cultural identity in the Portuguese speaking world; comparative sociology; comparative social policy; exiles, migrants and citizens (narrating and documenting displacement in contemporary Spain); issues in 3rd world politics; language and the city; minorities and migrants (exploring multicultural Germany); Vichy France (memory, ideology and engagement); final-year modern languages dissertation.
