Law is concerned with the legal rules by which society is regulated and the legal system(s) in which these rules operate; all legal systems are a product of historical, social, political and economic forces and the study of law therefore gives an insight into the nature of society itself; it involves not only the study of legal rules, but the development of intellectual qualities such as clear, careful and independent thought; precise use of language; the capacity to analyse and solve complex problems; the ability to present arguments in a clear, reasoned and logical manner; the power to distinguish the relevant from the irrelevant; and, generally, thoroughness of inquiry.
Modul program
Year 1: Legal system and method; criminal law; foundations of public law; foundations of private law; contract; delict; civil liberties; computing for law students; language studies. Year 2: Property; jurisprudence; commercial law; European institutions; family law; commercial organisations; substantive European law; trusts and succession; language studies. Year 3: German law courses studied at Regensburg or Freiburg University. Year 4: Evidence; conveyancing; forensic medicine; revenue law; private international law. Further optional courses include: introduction to French law; alternative methods of dispute resolution; public international law; practical mooting. Year 5: 10,000-word dissertation; options from: air and space law; American constitutional law; civil liberties; comparative law; commercial law; conveyancing; criminology; delict; environmental law; European institutions and law; European law; evidence; family law; government and law; intellectual property; maritime law; private international law; public international law; Scottish legal history; succession law; Honours French language; Honours German language; criminal justice; financial services law; legal issues in corporate management; moveable property; current issues in legal theory; legal ethics; unjustified enrichment.
