Mathematics gives students a broad and integrated introduction to the basic mathematics that should be known by a mathematics graduate; a thorough knowledge of mathematics is essential for a complete understanding of the sciences, and has become increasingly important with the development of new areas of application in the physical and biological sciences, engineering and social studies; in each year of the French course, students take compulsory language modules; in addition to choosing a number of optional modules, some thematic in character and some more traditionally chronological in approach; modules in aspects of linguistics and in the language of current affairs and business are also available; French language classes are taught in French.
