During the 1st 2 years of study a solid quantitative foundation is laid; some of the subjects covered include data collection and analysis, statistical modelling, elements of continuous and discrete mathematics and linear algebra; in each case, concepts are applied to real-world problem solving; the course comprises 3 main areas of study, mathematics, statistics and computing; students study topics from advanced calculus and linear algebra which underpin their study of subjects such as statistics; in their final year students study topics geared to the needs of employers such as operational research and statistics in the workplace; during the 1st 2 years basic statistical ideas and techniques are studied; in the final year students apply these techniques to areas particularly suited to the needs of business and industry, such as multivariate analysis and data mining; when focusing on computing, students study how to develop business IT systems and software in the 1st 2 years; there is less emphasis on computing in the final year as students concentrate more on the specialised mathematics topics.
