On the Middle East Studies course students achieve a high level of social scientific understanding of the Middle East; no language study is required, although students are free to study Persian, Kurdish or Arabic; the Islamic Studies programme focuses on Islam as a religion and as a civilisation; students learn to read classical and modern Arabic texts; no previous knowledge of Arabic is required.
