Research in clinical neurosciences is carried out in 4 closely collaborating units: Neurosurgery, Neurology Unit, Cambridge Centre for Brain Repair and Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre; Neurosurgery Unit: has specialised interests in acute brain injury and in the dynamics of the cerebral circulation as well as in the role of stem cells in recovery of brain damage; Neurology Unit: applications from those intending a career in academic clinical neurology are particularly welcome; research interests include the clinical neuroscience of multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, dementia and stroke using the techniques of genetics, cell and molecular biology, immunology, brain imaging and epidemiology; Cambridge Centre for Brain Repair: focused on the mechanisms of brain damage and strategies for neural regeneration; topics include: the biology of glial cells; processes underlying axonopathy; strategies to encourage regrowth of cells and axons in damaged brains; the function of stem cells in neural regeneration and adult neurogenesis; Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre: conducts research in the development and application of advanced imaging techniques using Positron Emission Tomography (GE Advance, GE cyclotron, CTI-Concorde microPET), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Bruker 3T wholebody MRI), and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy; active programmes exist with opportunities for chemists, pharmacologists, biologists, physicists, computer scientists and clinicians; in addition to the course fee (University Composition fee) students may have to pay a college fee.
