Students study a wide range of subjects including health, anatomy and physiology, social sciences, perioperative care, communication, drug calculations, perioperative skills and procedures, being part of the surgical team and operating alongside surgeons; year 1 modules cover issues including maintaining health and safety in clinical practice, applied anatomy and physiology in perioperative practice and an introduction to the principles of perioperative practice; in the 2nd year, students look at research and evidence based practice, the holistic perspectives of care in all 3 perioperative areas, surgical, anaesthetics and recovery; there is also a focus on applied pharmacology in perioperative practice, studying the drugs used, their effects and contra-indications; in year 3, students build on and enhance their knowledge and skills from the previous 2 years, critically reflecting and analysing complex perioperative issues, emergency and trauma situations and some enhanced roles.
