This course is ideal for students who are interested in pursuing a career in the public services sector, e.g. police, ambulance, fire service, or armed forces and prefer a more practical route of study. It provides them with opportunities to develop basic skills, knowledge and understanding through experiencing the range and types of activity that they will be expected to carry out serving the public. There is a strong emphasis on their own health, lifestyle and fitness and they will develop their physical sport and recreation skills. The course elements include understanding behaviour in public sector employment, team development in public services, team leadership in the uniformed public services, physical preparation and fitness for the uniformed services, government policies and the public services, citizenship, contemporary society and the public services, understanding discipline within the uniformed public services. As part of the course, students will also participate in outdoor activities such as map reading, high ropes and competitions organised by the services. The course will also include key skills in communication and numbers at the appropriate level. On completion of this course students can progress to higher education or further training into the army, police or fire service.
