The course looks beyond the established boundaries of set, costume, lighting and sound design to take a total view of the performance space; the degree considers the organisation of this space is an artistic practice in its own right, taking account, but not limited by the conventions, of set, lighting and the other traditional theatrical disciplines; through a combination of theoretical and practical explorations, the course critically examines a wide range of contemporary practices from playhouse theatre to site-specific performance, from environmental theatre to performance installation; the focus of the course is the development of personal design practice within or alongside the practice of theatre and performance.
