The university offers a wide range of courses in 3 main areas; Spanish studies, Spanish American studies (including Latinos in the USA), and Portuguese and Brazilian studies; focusing particularly on the 19th and 20th centuries; the course explores areas of Latin American studies, in particular, cultural studies, sociolinguistics, history and politics; Latin American courses are available to all students who study Spanish and/or Portuguese, and students may choose to spend the 3rd year in Latin America; students can spend the year abroad as an English language assistant in a school, studying at a partner universities or on a work placement; countries where students can spend include Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Chile, Venezuela and Brazil; if two languages are studied, students normally spend the year abroad in 1 country, rather than splitting it between the 2; the administrative organisation of the year abroad is carried out by the international exchange administrator, and students are assigned a supervisor who looks after learners during this year; we place great importance on the development of graduate skills vital for future employment through the integration of transferable skills into learning and teaching, in particular the language skills and strategy training for all 1st-years.

Modul program

Year 1: Spanish language; introduction to the Portuguese-speaking world; history and politics of the Hispanic world; the languages of the Spanish-speaking world; narrative and cultural identity in the Hispanic world; reading culture; reading the city; elements of linguistics (sound, structure and meaning); applications of linguistics. Year 2: Managing research and learning; globalisation (economics, politics, culture and the nation state); auto/biography, testimony and biography; discourse analysis; sound and voice; gender, race and nation in modern Latin America; high, popular and mass culture in modern Spain and Latin America; Spanish language; ethnography for language learners; psycholinguistics; syntax (studying language structure); teaching English as a 2nd/foreign language; culture and society in Portugal and Brazil; exploring Spanish linguistics; myths and realities of contemporary Spain. Year 3: Independent study project; year abroad. Year 4: Final-year modern languages dissertation; 2nd language acquisition theory; advanced syntax; language teaching theory and practice; introduction to the Portuguese-speaking world; exiles, migrants and citizens (narrating and documenting displacement in contemporary Spain); transatlantic crossings (linguistic variation in the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America); exploring talk (sociolinguistic perspectives on communication); writing in a 2nd language; historical memory in modern Latin America; barrios and borders; cultural hybridity in Latin America (the global and the local); sex, soap operas and female dissidents (representations of women in the Hispanic world); Spanish language.
