The College traces its founding to 1742 by followers of John Amos Comenius, the 17th century Moravian bishop whose humanistic ideals helped to shape modern education. Those ideals that learning should be available to all, that teaching should be in accord with human nature, and that education should be applied to practical uses, are much in evidence at Moravian. Today, the College enrolls students from a great variety of socioeconomic, religious, racial, and ethnic backgrounds; provides for highly personalized learning experiences; and offers many opportunities for students to direct their education toward individual and professional goals. It expresses its Moravian heritage in musical and artistic programs of great distinction, which are shared with the Bethlehem community. Together with its cultural offerings, Moravian's handsome historic campuses, the community service of its undergraduates, and its programs of graduate and professional education for adults make it a valued part of the fabric of Bethlehem. Its Moravian Theological Seminary, an ecumenical learning community preparing men and women for Christian leadership, is a global resource. In 1954, after two centuries of separate development and growth, the women's and the men's institutions were combined to form a single coeducational college. It has maintained a closely related but academically distinct identity as a graduate school of theology. As a result of the merger, Moravian College became the Lehigh Valley's first coeducational institution of higher education. This college campus has two beautiful, well-maintained sections. Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus on Church Street is the center of the Bethlehem historic district; the Main Street campus is eight blocks away in a residential area. Campus vast 85-acre campus located in historic Bethlehem, Pennsylvania (population 75,000) 90 miles west of New York City and 60 miles north of Philadelphia, in the heart of the Lehigh Valley.

Moravian's residence halls are located on the Main Street Campus in a residential section of the Bethlehem community and the historic Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus. In an effort to accommodate a range of lifestyle preferences, housing units vary from larger, traditional residence halls to small group units, fraternity and sorority houses, apartments and townhouses. Men presently reside in Rau/Hassler Hall, Bernhardt/Wilhelm Hall, the Anna Nitschmann and August Spangenburg Houses, three fraternity houses, and units in the upperclass apartment/townhouse areas. Women's housing is provided in Rau/Hassler Hall, Bernhardt/Wilhelm Hall, Jo Smith Hall, the Anna Nitschmann and August Spangenburg Houses, four sorority houses and units in the upperclass housing areas. Residential facilities for both men and women also are available on the Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus, with Main Hall as a residence for women, Clewell Hall for men and The HILL (Hurd Integrated Living and Learning) Community available for both genders beginning in the fall 2009 semester. Dining facilities for the Hurd campus are in Clewell Dining Hall. The buildings of the Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus reflect the charm and architectural genius of colonial Bethlehem and the early Moravian community and are equipped with contemporary facilities for the comfort and convenience of the residents. Though students are within walking distance of Main Campus, the College provides bus and van transportation between the two campuses.
